Printer Information

I'm not sure whether my printer is an inkjet or a laser printer. How can I tell? []
The easiest way to tell the difference is in the cartridges. Inkjet printers typically use small cartridges that fit in the palm of your hand. Laser printers use longer heavier cartridges that are typically at least 11" long.

How can I tell if my printer uses dye based, solvent based, or pigment based inks? []
The only sure way to tell is to look it up at the manufacturer's web site. However, a good rule of thumb is that if the ink itself has a name such as: "DuraBrite" "Claria" "Vivera" "Ultra Chrome" etc.. it is most likely a pigment or solvent based ink.

I want to print a white design, can I do that with my laser or inkjet printer? []
Unfortunately not. Inkjet and laser printers use a blend of four colors: black, yellow, magenta, and cyan. Both printer types rely on the media being printed on to provide the white tone. So, if you print on a clear media anything that is white in the design will be clear when printed.

Which technology is better for use with your media, Inkjet or Laser? []
It depends on your application. Laser print has the advantage of being mostly waterproof after being printed on a resistant media, while most inkjet inks are water soluble. Inkjet printers typically offer high quality print though, especially when printing high resolution photographs.

I'm not sure if my color laser printer has an oil fuser unit or not. How can I tell? []
If your color laser printer is less than 10 years old it will most likely not have an oil fuser unit. The only way to tell for sure would be to look up your printers specifications on the manufacturers website.

Decal Paper Information

What is a water-slide decal exactly? []
Water slide decals are images and/or text printed on an extremely thin film. The film comes on a paper backing so it holds together to be printed on. After printing the film is submerged in water to separate it from the paper backing. Water-slide decals are so thin that when applied to a surface they give the illusion of being painted onto the surface. We have a video demonstrating the process located here: http://www.papilio.com/video_instructions.html

I see that if I buy the inkjet version of your decal paper I need a liquid or aerosol item. How does this work? []
Since inkjet inks are water soluble the ink must be sealed onto the decal paper sheet before it is submerged in water, otherwise the ink would just come off of the sheet into the water. We have two products suitable for this. One is a liquid version which is spread over the decal sheet with a foam applicator. The other is an aerosol spray which is applied to the sheet.

What's the difference between water-slide decals and rub-on decals? []
Rub on decals are like water-slide decals except instead of using water to release the decal from the paper backing, pressure is used. After printing rub-on decals in mirror image you coat the sheet with our rub-on tack or spray it with our clear aerosol adhesive. When you cut out your individual decals and apply them to the surface to be decorated, sticky side down. Apply pressure using a credit card, Popsicle stick, or other hard edge. This will transfer the decal. We recommend the rub-on decal paper for surfaces which are porous thus making them incompatible with water-slide decal paper.

Should I buy the clear decal paper, or the white decal paper? []
The clear decal paper is ideal when placing your decals on a white or light colored surface. The white decal paper should be used if applying your decals to a dark surface, or if your design contains white. Since inkjet ink is actually transparent the clear decals will appear faded and difficult to see on a dark surface.

How long will a water slide decal last? []
As with most products, it depends on what the decal is exposed to. If used for purely decorative purposes a decal will last for many years. If the decals are hand washed on a frequent basis the decal will start to chip away within a few years. If our color laser bake on decal papers are used the decals will even withstand several dishwasher cycles before beginning to separate form the item decorated.

What can I do to make my decals more durable? []
For decals that are considered permanent we recommend our two part urethane kit (UOLK). It can be found here at texascraft.com

Self-Adhesive Film Information

What's the difference between your ultra cling and static cling materials? []
Our static cling materials rely purely on static to adhere to the surfaces they are applied to. The ultra-cling media features a very low tack, easily removable, reusable adhesive. For applications where the cling will be removed multiple times or windows/doors with an exterior face we recommend using the ultra cling.

Why do I need white window masking spray if I'm making clear window clings? []
Since inkjet ink and laser toner are transparent printing transparent ink on a transparent sheet placed on a transparent window can give a very washed out or faded look. The white window masking spray provides your cling with a white background to provide contrast. This makes your window clings vibrant and visible from a greater distance. White window masking spray is a must if the car window the cling will be applied to is tinted. We offer a video showing this process step by step at: http://www.papilio.com/video_instructions.html

Why do I need to print in mirror image when making clear window clings? []
Since the printable side of the cling is the side which will be facing the inside of the window you must print in mirror image so that any text in your design will be facing the correct way. Most graphics manipulation programs allow for easy mirroring, also more and more printer device drivers offer the option at the time of printing as well. This can be particularly useful if the design will be used to print more than just window clings.
